ATLANTIS hybrid transatlantic youth summer academy on climate protection and adaptation to climate change | July 11-15, 2022

ATLANTIS 2022 connects youth from the Atlanta area in the United States with youth in the Ruhr Valley in Germany through an immersive training program. Participants learn about climate change, and biodiversity loss and health and learn how to address these two challenges, both at the local level and in a transatlantic context.
ATLANTIS is a hybrid summer academy for young people on climate protection and adaptation. The summer academy is designed for one week, from Monday, July 11, to Friday, July 15, in the mornings and afternoons, during which young people gain knowledge about climate protection and adaptation to climate change and learn to apply this knowledge immediately in their own projects. Given the ongoing pandemic, we decided on a hybrid approach that minimizes the need for travel.
For successful participation, young people receive a certificate of the project partners that confirms the qualification and participation in a transatlantic climate education program. In addition, we offer prizes for particularly good performance by young people.
Community Health Aligning Revitalization Resilience & Sustainability (CHARRS) has been working with POCACITO for years. CHARRS is an environmental health organization whose work is intergenerational and interdisciplinary, focusing on equity, health, and environmental justice in African-American and marginalized communities. CHARRS works with youth in Metropolitan Atlanta and is very interested in Atlanta youth building relationships and collaborating with youth from Germany. CHARRS works with youth in Metropolitan Atlanta.
For participants in Germany, the program looks as follows:
- Mornings: outdoor activities in the Ruhr region
- Afternoons: exchange with students from Atlanta, climate science lectures and project team work
Participation is open to youth from 14 to 18. Some English language knowledge is required, but there are staff at hand who can help with translating and any questions.
The outdoor activities are inclusive and open to all youth.
Participants will be asked to attend all days of the program, July 11 to 15, and contribute a co-pay.

ATLANTIS 2022 verbindet Jugendliche aus dem Raum Atlanta in den Vereinigten Staaten mit Jugendlichen im Ruhrgebiet in Deutschland durch ein immersives Trainingsprogramm. Die Teilnehmer lernen etwas über den Klimawandel, den Verlust der biologischen Vielfalt und die Gesundheit und erfahren, wie sie diese beiden Herausforderungen sowohl auf lokaler Ebene als auch in einem transatlantischen Kontext angehen können.
ATLANTIS ist eine hybride Sommerakademie für junge Menschen zum Thema Klimaschutz und Anpassung. Die Sommerakademie ist auf eine Woche ausgelegt, von Montag, 11. Juli, bis Freitag, 15. Juli, vormittags und nachmittags, in der junge Menschen Wissen über Klimaschutz und Anpassung an den Klimawandel erwerben und lernen, dieses Wissen sofort in eigenen Projekten anzuwenden. Angesichts der anhaltenden Pandemie haben wir uns für einen hybriden Ansatz entschieden, der die Notwendigkeit von Reisen minimiert.
Für die erfolgreiche Teilnahme erhalten die Jugendlichen ein Zertifikat der Projektpartner, das die Qualifikation und Teilnahme an einem transatlantischen Klimabildungsprogramm bestätigt. Darüber hinaus werden Preise für besonders gute Leistungen der Jugendlichen ausgelobt.

Für Teilnehmende in Deutschland sind das Programm wie folgt aus:
Morgens: Outdoor-Aktivitäten im Ruhrgebiet
Nachmittags: Austausch Jugendlichen aus Atlanta, Klima-Vorlesungen und Projektarbeit
Die Teilnahme steht Jugendlichen zwischen 14 und 18 Jahren offen. Einige Englischkenntnisse sind erforderlich, aber es stehen Mitarbeiter zur Verfügung, die bei der Übersetzung und bei Fragen helfen können.
Die Outdoor-Aktivitäten sind inklusiv und offen für alle Jugendlichen.
Die Teilnehmer werden gebeten, an allen Tagen des Programms vom 11. bis 15. Juli teilzunehmen und einen Kostenbeitrag zu leisten.
