2021 Hybrid German-American Summer Academy on Coastal Biodiversity and Climate Change in Mississippi
From July 12 to 16 2021, youth from Germany and Mississippi met online and explored how to preserve coastal biodiversity and how to protect the coasts and coastal ecosystems against the impacts of climate change. They heard from scientists in Germany and Mississippi and ran their own investigative projects.
POCACITO, Mississippi State University’s Coastal Conservation and Restoration Program and the Consulate General of Germany worked together to provide this summer program in Mississippi for US students. Students from Germany joined for zoom lectures and discussions.
5 days of exploring, including interactive sessions with experts and students from Germany and field trips in collaboration with Mississippi State University Extension. Trips included kayaking, hiking, and boating. All successful participants received a certificate of participation in this international science and coastal protection program, signed by the Consulate General of Germany.
Mississippi State University Extension worked with POCACITO on a full in-person program in Mississippi. Youth in Germany received support and guidance remotely.
Special thanks to the German Foreign Office and the Consulate General of Germany in Atlanta for their generous support.
